Less than week till the event....get your presentations ready, even if it is just a one minute introduction! Read on for more....
For this to work, we need people to get up and introduce themselves to the group and talk for a bit -- hopefully, lots of people. There will be plenty of time after the presentations to follow up with presenters. The short presentations can be any of the following:
If you want to talk for more than a minute, please do your best to polish your presentation. Graphics are great, but if you really need to show an app running in an emulator, you can do that. For most people, I suggest putting things together in a web page, pdf, or google docs -- so it is easy to load onto the demo computer, and you can show images, screen shots, source code, etc. And of course, rehearse what you are going to say, and try to avoid rambling on too much. :)
We'll allow presentations up to ten minutes, but the longer they are, the more we expect you to have done your homework (that is, made slides/graphics, practiced your talk, etc). If you have a decent laptop, we can probably hook it to the projector. (we're working on that now)
If you have questions or want to be involved in organizing, please email me (Rob) at rjbrown at gmail.
--------------------------------------------------------
(here's the original idea as posted 6 months ago)
Most of the event could consist of short (< 10 minute) pitches by those who are looking to join forces with others, whether for fun, or with entrepreneurial aspirations. The idea being to find collaborators who have complementary skills and interests, and are interested in working together to build and release Android apps (or developing some other Android-oriented project or business). Presenters could pitch their ideas, talk about what skills and time commitment they have to offer, what they are looking for in others, etc. Presenters should probably try to have something visual to show, such any work they have already done. (powerpoint? prototype app?)
There might also be a couple longer presentations on the "how" of forming and organizing a collaborative project that could become a company, if anyone with appropriate experience volunteers for that.
Even if you are not interested in going entrepreneurial, it might be fun to see the ideas others are exploring.
I changed the date and time from Thursday, April 21, 2011 at 7:00 PM to Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 7:00 PM
Sorry I've been out of touch, I am not in town. It doesn't look like this is going to happen. I just changed the date, unfortunately Meetup would not let me simply remove the date.
Why does this meetup keep changing?
Anyone interested in *just getting together*?
For those who are interested in geeking out Android or checking out the Noisebridge space, there will be a 5mof lightning talk series this evening starting at Seven, and there will be android geeks in the back Church classroom from about 6pm onward. There is nothing formal prepared on the android front, but it should be an amusing time nonetheless.
The reason it keeps changing is because (either due to Meetup being lame, or because the configuration for this group is messed up), things that were posted as "ideas" turned into scheduled meetups. Someone posted a date for this one, and I couldn't remove it, all I could do was push it into the future. Regardless, it is nothing more than an *idea* that has gotten some discussion. Please don't show up at Noisebridge tonight for this.
The Event is listed on the Noisebridge Calendar (Noisebridge/Nights on Thursday) and has been regularly attended for the past month.
It is NOT a power networking event, it is not a lecture series. There are other events going on in the (4500sq/ft) space this evening (specifically, a 'five minutes of fame' lecture talk series that tends to draw ~100+ crowd)
We will be in the back of the space in the 'Church' Classroom. Otherwise, enjoy the free space/crowd.
I agree on the May 19th date! Let's make it happen. GetJar is thinking about hosting a smallish developer event sometime soon. I'm looking for a venue, and was just reading the NoiseBridge wiki. Do you guys think it's a good place for an event like that?
Gee, I guess I shouldn't make any plans based on these events from now on, like I did for tonight. Within one day, you move the date? I changed my mind. I'm not going. This is crazy.
Is this still happening next week? I'd love to go, but on a different date, since it conflicts with UX Eye (as other members have stated).
Noisebridge is rather busy on this day of the month with 5 minutes of fame occuring that night.
Has anyone tried finding a venue for this event yet? We should push the date out again to prevent people from accidentally planning to come (again).
I went last month :) There were a few cool people to talk with, and it was my introduction to noisebridge, so it was worth it.
If anyone can recomend android networking meetings in SF, please msg me or post here. I'm having a devil of time meeting new droids. I feel like I must somehow be missing all the cool parties :)
Is this event really happening? I work at a cool space called Founders Den. The managing partners over here may be open to hosting a future Android Meetup event.
michael - this event desperately needs a real home IMHO... as a budding Android dev I really would like to see it get off the ground... you should probably message Aleksandar directly and see what he has to say.
Alright, so is this thing really on for tomorrow or still up in the air?
I changed the date and time from Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 7:00 PM to Monday, May 30, 2011 at 7:00 PM
@Joseph Have you actually confirmed with Noisebridge that the space is available for this purpose at this time? If not, please either contact noisebridge and confirm that the space can be used, or change the location back to "Venue Needed": it prevents other members from planning to come to an event that may not actually happen.
Aside from 5MoF every 3rd Thursday night, Monday nights are typically the busiest nights at Noisebridge, as there are 3 other active groups attending: Circuit Hackers, iPhone devs, and the Python Class. There's simply no space for another large group.
Further, Noisebridge really doesn't have the room to accommodate a group of 176 people. Maybe 50 MAX, on a night with few other groups. And even then there may not be enough chairs.
Please consider moving the date and/or location of your event.
The best nights are currently on Fridays, and 2nd & 4th Thursdays. Always check the Noisebridge calendar beforehand and make sure to update the wiki whenever you make a change to the date of your meetings. Thanks

Just to add, if the group is actually more like under 50, then I think Noisebridge would welcome your group. I also personally would love to attend.
could we not use the google office downtown? other options include parisoma, the hub, or techshop
I work for IGN Entertainment and we can host this event. We are on 2nd and Brannan in SOMA. Any interest?
I'm on Townsend in SOMA between 2nd and 3rd.. so IGN is perfect for me!
@Kenny That's great new. If IGN can host this event, I'm sure many here would highly encourage to take the lead and set the location, and set the date and time to something that will work for that space. If there's an attendee limitation, we'll have to figure out how to reflect that here so that the space doesn't get overfilled.
We are more than happy to host the event at IGN but 5/30 won't work for us since it's a holiday and the office won't be open. We have room for up to 150 people.
Kenny, maybe you'd be willing to post a few suggested dates for the event, let people comment on them for a couple days, and then we can start solidifying plans. (It is unfortunate that Meetup keeps confusing people by disallowing people from removing the suggested date!) Since I originally suggested it (and admittedly dropped the ball due to unexpected obligations) I'd be willing to help plan and organize it if needed. Anyone else want to be involved -- or take over -- with the organizing?
2nd and Brannan sounds good to me. I am willing to help organize, have done MeetUps before. Is Alex actually the group organizer, or is his name in there by MeetUp accident too? :-))
Alex is the group organizer, but he has been silent on this one so we need to make it happen ourselves (I've talked to him offline about it, but he hasn't said anything on the site). I do wish he would go on and remove the date from the event, though, since regular users can't do that.
I changed the location from Venue Needed to IGN Entertainment, Inc.
I changed the date and time from Monday, May 30, 2011 at 7:00 PM to Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at 7:00 PM
Sorry for the late response guys. 6/14 should be fine for us. Let me check with our office manager to make sure that there's no other event scheduled for that date and will confirm it shortly.
Sweet! Thanks Kenny. So we're officially official. If anyone wants to help with the planning/organizing so that this goes smoothly, please email me at [email protected]
great kenny! thanks! so glad this meetup is finally going to happen!
Question 1: Does anyone have a mini-display port or DVI to VGA adaptors so various machines can connect to the (VGA) projector?
Question 2: Does anyone have any thoughts on getting some refreshments or snacks to be provided? I've never done one of these before so I don't have connections to potential sponsors.
ROB - Google " Google Event Sponsorship" I believe they may have a form you can submit - maybe they'll send a rep given the number of attendees your expecting and they can expense drinks and snacks.... just an idea
@Ron Well I'm going to try it but it doesn't look likely given the short time frame (they say give them 3 months heads up).
@Gyubok Yes, it's for really happening this time. Kenny Ma (above in the comments) has offered IGN as a venue, and Keith Williams is helping organize it (and will be visiting the venue monday to check out the equipment etc). We have no idea how many people will present, hopefully a lot. The venue only holds 150 people though, and 212 are signed up....I'm pretty confident there will be less than 150 that actually show up.
I met with our contacts at IGN this morning.
The event will on the fourth floor- sign in at the door, then get carded up the elevator.
There will be both seats and tables available
There will be a PA system and a projector, and the Wifi should work well, too.
BTW, the projector takes VGA output only. If anybody has a converter cable for MACs (DVI/VGA) please bring it.
There will be soda, and thanks to IGN's generosity, pizza!
See you there.
Thanks Keith! (and thanks IGN) Now the big question is how many people are going to have something to show.... In the worst case, we'll just get as many people as we can to introduce themselves and talk a bit about what they are doing or want to do. I'm looking forward to seeing how this little experiment goes... :)
If anyone has a mini-displayport to VGA adaptor, so mac laptops can connect to the projector, please bring it tonight! Also anyone who wants to bring a camera to photograph the event that would be appreciated as well
i went to the noisebridge website, and there is no such event on their calendar (https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Noisebridge
)
